It is a perennial herbaceous perennial with a powerful, branched and fleshy root that is rich in mucilage. The most effective and commonly used part of the plant is the root, which contains up to 30% mucus. It is precisely because of its precious mucus that marshmallow is used to soothe irritated mucous membranes.

HABITAT:
The tame mallow is a native species in Europe, but it is also present in other parts of the world, including North Africa and Asia. It loves moist areas such as swampy meadows, river banks and lakes. Mallow root has a very long history in folk medicine dating back to ancient Greek and Egyptian times. More than 2800 years ago, references to this plant were made in Homer’s “Iliad”, since at that time this “slippery” plant was a popular way to treat coughs and sore throats. Today, holistic practitioners use mallow in the same way as they did a thousand years ago because there are powerful active ingredients inside the plant that help remove mucus, reduce inflammation, and kill bacteria in a natural way.

CHEMICAL COMPOSITION: beta carotenes, betaine, caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid, kaempferol, paraffin, ferulic acid. It is used to boost immunity and help in the natural treatment of many diseases. For anyone who suffers from a sore throat, cough or cold, marshmallow root can be taken orally or in the form of tea. The antititular properties and abilities of natural mucus allow it to reduce inflammation and irritation of the throat, reduce swelling of the lymph nodes, accelerate healing time, and reduce exacerbation of dry cough. It creates a protective layer on the inflamed mucous membrane, which is why marshmallow extract is added to many cough syrups and throat lozenges. It also helps stop the urge to cough and facilitates the process of saliva production, allowing it to help reduce dry mouth symptoms.

Use marshmallow root in combination with echinacea, myrrh, oregano or cypress. When combined, they target the underlying cause of the disease (including bacteria) and coat the throat to relieve discomfort. If you experience symptoms of painful tonsils, bronchitis, a urinary tract infection, or a respiratory infection, taking marshmallow root at the first sign of discomfort such as swelling, burning, and tenderness can help relieve symptoms. It helps increase urine output, which improves the body’s ability to pull bacteria out of the urinary tract. For this reason, it is also recommended for the treatment of kidney stone symptoms.

According to some studies, marshmallow is an effective natural remedy for certain digestive disorders, including irritable bowel syndrome. It is also a natural remedy for ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. It helps prevent heartburn, stomach ulcers, diarrhea and constipation. It is interesting how the properties of marshmallow mucus remain stable in the body all the way to the digestive system until they reach the colon. This means that mucus does not change shape as it passes through the digestive tract and is therefore useful for soothing the symptoms of inflammatory digestive disorders.

Marshmallow is a natural remedy for skin diseases such as psoriasis, eczema, and you can also use it for insect bites, wounds, burns, itching, cracked skin. It soothes the skin’s neurosensory system, has anti-irritant properties and is even well tolerated by people with allergies and hypersensitive skin. If you can’t find a natural ointment made from marshmallow extracts, try making your own moisturizer for dry skin by adding a few drops to a cream based on coconut or jojoba oil. It is used together with natural remedies such as tea tree oil and aloe vera.

Marshmallow also reduces the risk of blood clots and heart attacks and strokes. It has diuretic effects and reduces fluid retention, edema and bloating. Antioxidants such as flavonoids found inside mallow prevent oxidative damage that leads to chronic diseases, including the growth of cancerous tumors and inflammatory disorders, as well as neurodegenerative diseases. Mallow accelerates tissue healing by activating the immune system, especially by facilitating a process called phagocytosis that removes damaged or dead cells from the body. Recently, research has also shown that it has potential neuroprotective effects that can protect us from dementia and similar brain diseases.

The antioxidant and protective properties of marshmallow root support healthy cell function, which promotes healthy skin and hair. Therefore, marshmallow root is sometimes used as an ingredient in natural shampoos and conditioners. Due to the large amount of antioxidants, marshmallow root can contribute to the healing of damaged bile ducts of the liver. It helps to initiate the production of epithelial cells that line the inside of the ducts and organs. On the other hand, a healthier bile duct helps the liver detoxify more effectively. The phytonutrients of marshmallow root can also bind to heavy metals and expel them from the body.

HOW TO USE THIS PLANT?
Mallow root is available in several forms. In health food stores, you can buy tea, capsules, tinctures, balms, creams or skin balms. The safe dose for marshmallow root has yet to be determined, but the recommended doses are based on traditional usage. The literature suggests drinking 250 ml of tea at least 1 to 2 hours before or after taking any oral medications. For the treatment of digestive problems, it is suggested to take up to 6 g per day in the form of powder, capsules or tincture.
