CHLAMYDIA : symptoms, causes, complications, treatment…

Chlamydia is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections, caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. Although the symptoms of this venereal disease are usually mild, it can lead to serious complications that cause even more serious consequences, one of which is infertility. The infection is diagnosed in 4-12% of adult women and 9-25% of adolescent girls, and almost 50% of them are not aware of the infection. Chlamydia in women often does not cause any symptoms, while in men the symptoms are painful urination and transparent to mucopurulent (purulent) discharge from the urethra. Most of the time, the symptoms begin to manifest a few days after the person has become infected or in other words, the incubation period is from 7 to 28 days. In women, chlamydia can cause scarring on the fallopian tube, sterility, infertility, increase the chances of ectopic pregnancy and pelvic inflammatory disease.

How is chlamydia transmitted?
Chlamydia is transmitted through bodily secretions during vaginal, anal or oral sexual intercourse, as well as by an infected mother to the child during vaginal delivery. Also, contamination of the fingers with genital discharge can lead to infection of the eye (chlamydia in the eye), when chlamydial conjunctivitis occurs. In this case, it’s an auto-infection. The risk group is adolescents, while the percentage of patients is half as high in the elderly. The frequency is associated with frequent changes of sexual partners, impaired quality of cervical mucus, which facilitates the penetration of viruses and bacteria, and unprotected sexual intercourse.

The risk factors for contracting chlamydia are the same as for any other sexually transmitted disease, i.e. unawareness, lack of information and recklessness before entering into sexual intercourse. Sexually transmitted diseases are also associated with early sexual intercourse, promiscuous behavior, irregular gynecological examinations. Unprotected sex is one of the main risks of contracting any sexually transmitted disease. In terms of protection, the condom is the safest contraceptive when it comes to sexually transmitted diseases. It is believed that the chance of transmitting the infection from an infected partner to a healthy one during unprotected sex is about 75%.
