Early detection of colorectal cancer is critical to successful treatment. In this regard, preventive examinations are extremely important. In Croatia, people over the age of 50 are offered a free occult blood test in the stool. If the test is positive, a colonoscopy should be performed, which is a more accurate method of diagnosis.
Treatment for colon cancer depends on the stage of the disease and may include surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. In the early stages of the disease, surgery is often enough to cure. In more advanced stages, a combination of different methods of treatment is required.
Lifestyle changes can significantly reduce the risk of colorectal cancer. These include:
- A balanced diet rich in fiber (fruits, vegetables, cereals)
- Regular physical activity
- Maintaining a healthy body weight
- Restriction of consumption of red meat and processed foods
