What are parasites and why are they present in our body?
Parasites are microscopic or visible organisms that live in the body of a host – in this case, a human – and use its nutrients for their own growth and reproduction. They not only draw energy from our body, but also create toxins that are harmful to health in the long run. There are multiple types of parasites that can live in the human body, including protozoa, worms, tapeworms, flukes, and other helminths.
Due to deteriorating diet, polluted water, declining immunity and global travel – parasitic infections are no longer a problem only in poor countries. Today, they are increasingly common in Europe as well.
How does parasite infestation occur?
Infection can occur almost imperceptibly – without pain and without immediately recognizable symptoms. The most common routes of infection are:
🔹 Food and water: Undercooked meat, raw fish (sushi), unwashed fruits and vegetables, contaminated water, unpasteurized milk.
🔹 Contact with animals: Especially with pets (dogs, cats) that can transmit toxoplasmosis, tapeworm and other parasites.
🔹 Travel: Exotic destinations with lower hygiene standards – water, food, insect bites.
🔹 Infected faeces and surfaces: Not washing hands, public toilets, swimming pools.
🔹 Blood transmission and sexual contact: Some parasites are transmitted directly through blood, mucous membranes, and sexual contact.
What parasites most often attack humans?
- Giardia lamblia – the most common cause of diarrhea in the world
- Enterobius vermicularis (pinworm) – white worms, often in children
- Toxoplasma gondii – transmitted through cats
- Ascaris lumbricoides – an intestinal worm that can grow up to 30 cm
- Taenia solium (tapeworm) – transmitted by eating infected meat
- Trichinella spiralis – transmitted through raw pork
- Entamoeba histolytica – the causative agent of amebiasis, a dangerous intestinal infection
- Strongyloides stercoralis – penetrates the skin (e.g. barefoot walking on the ground)
Symptoms caused by parasites – what you need to know
🔸 1. Chronic fatigue
Feeling exhausted and powerless, even after a long sleep, is a common symptom. Parasites feed on your nutrients and energy.
🔸 2. Constant digestive problems
Bloating, cramps, diarrhea, constipation, alternating disturbances – all this can be caused by parasites that irritate the intestinal wall.
🔸 3. Uncontrollable hunger or loss of appetite
Some parasites “steal” glucose and nutrients, which makes you feel hungry immediately after eating or lose your appetite for no reason.
🔸 4. Unexplained weight loss or gain
Parasites affect metabolism and absorption. Are you losing weight even though you eat normally? This is a red alert.
🔸 5. Anaemia
Some parasites (e.g. intestinal worms) feed on red blood cells and cause iron deficiency – which causes weakness, dizziness and fatigue.
🔸 6. Itchy skin, rash, eczema
The body reacts to toxins secreted by parasites. The skin is often the first place where changes are seen.
🔸 7. Insomnia and night gnashing of teeth
Parasites are most active at night – they can cause discomfort, itching, restless sleep and waking up at the same time every night (usually between 2 and 3 hours).
🔸 8. Mental fog
Forgetfulness, poor concentration and slow thinking are often associated with toxins secreted by parasites.
🔸 9. Mood swings, anxiety, depression
Disturbed intestinal flora and parasites in the intestines affect the secretion of serotonin – the hormone of happiness.
🔸 10. Recurrent fungal infections
Especially in women – vaginal candidiasis, inflammation, discharge. Intestinal dysbiosis favors fungi.
Who is at the highest risk?
- Children and the elderly
- People with weakened immunity
- Patients with digestive diseases (Chron, ulcerative colitis, gastritis)
- Travelers to tropical countries
- Raw food lovers
- Pet owners
How to diagnose and treat parasites?
In classical medicine, stool analysis is used, but often it does not detect all types of parasites. This is why a holistic approach is recommended – in which the symptoms are analyzed together with the history of nutrition, gut condition and immunity.
