WHAT IS URIC ACID?
Uric acid (or uric acid) is an organic compound that is formed in the body as the end product of purine metabolism. Purines are substances that are naturally found in some foods, and in smaller quantities they are also produced by our body.
Uric acid is normally excreted from the body through urine. But if too much uric acid accumulates in the body, it can be christened in the joints and other tissues, leading to diseases such as gout.
Some of the factors that can lead to an increase in uric acid levels in the blood are:
- Excessive consumption of foods rich in purines (e.g. meat, fish, poultry, legumes)
- Drinking alcohol
- Dehydration
- Obesity
- Certain medications
- Genetic predisposition
Symptoms of elevated levels of uric acid in the blood may include:
- Joint pain
- Swelling of the joints
- Redness and heat of the joints
- Joint stiffness
- Muscle pain
- Weariness
- Loss of appetite
If you have any of these symptoms, it is important that you consult your doctor. Your doctor will be able to take a blood sample and check your uric acid levels.
Treatment of elevated levels of uric acid in the blood includes:
- Change of diet (reduction of purine consumption)
- Drinking plenty of fluids
- Weight loss (if you are obese)
- Taking natural remedies
Prevention of elevated levels of uric acid in the blood includes:
- Healthy eating
- Drinking plenty of fluids
- Determination and weight control
- Restriction of alcohol consumption
- Regular physical activity
