Age spots are a common cosmetic problem that affects a large number of people over the age of 50. Although they do not pose a health risk, they often impair aesthetics and self-confidence. The causes of these spots can be numerous, and one of the most important factors is a chronic deficiency of the essential mineral – zinc.
What is zinc and why is it important?
Zinc is an essential mineral that is present in all organs, tissues, and body fluids. The average amount of zinc in the human body is about 2 to 3 grams, and the highest concentrations are found in skeletal muscles, bones, kidneys, liver, retina of the eye, skin and prostate.
It is important to note that the human body cannot produce zinc on its own, so it is essential to regularly consume it through food or dietary supplements. Zinc is known primarily for its role in boosting immunity, but its functions are much broader and include:
- Support in the growth and development of the body
- Regulation of the immune response, especially through the activation of T-lymphocytes (white blood cells)
- Neurological functions and reproduction
- Participation in the production of insulin, sex hormones, growth hormones and over 300 enzymes
Zinc and skin health – how does it help?
Zinc plays a key role in the production of collagen, a protein that is essential for skin firmness, elasticity and health. In addition, zinc:
- Helps reduce the formation of melanin, the pigment responsible for dark age spots
- Maintains acid-base balance in the body
- Prevents allergic reactions and skin diseases such as psoriasis
- Supports the health of the liver, hair and nails
- Contributes to the prevention of osteoporosis
Due to its role in the immune system, zinc deficiency can weaken the body’s defenses, which increases the risk of age spots and other skin damage.
Recommended daily dose and additional tips
For optimal results, the recommended daily dose of zinc is around 80 mg. In addition to zinc, it is recommended to take:
- Coenzyme Q10 – a powerful antioxidant that promotes cell health
- Magnesium – in the amount of 750 to 1000 mg per day, which helps in numerous metabolic processes and contributes to the preservation of the skin
The combination of these elements significantly supports the body in preventing the formation and reduction of existing age spots.
Natural recipe to remove age spots – baking soda and lemon
In addition to internal care, proper skin care from the outside is also important. We propose a simple and effective natural paste recipe that will help remove age spots:
Ingredients:
- 2 small tablespoons of baking soda
- 1 small spoonful of fresh lemon juice
Instructions:
- Mix baking soda and lemon juice in a bowl until you get a paste.
- Add more lemon juice if needed for your desired consistency.
- Apply the paste to areas with blemishes – face, neck or other parts of the skin.
- Leave it on for 15 minutes.
- Rinse with warm water.
This paste gently removes dead skin cells, cleanses pores, reduces acne and blackheads, and promotes a radiant and even complexion. If you want to treat larger areas of skin, adjust the amounts of ingredients proportionally.
