CAPSELLA BURSA (CELANDINE, SHEPARDS PURSE)
Celandine or shepherd’s purse is a weed plant. It belongs to the cruciferous family, which includes many vegetable species that we encounter on a daily basis. Although it is native to Europe and Asia, this plant can be found all over the world today and grows as a weed. It literally grows “at every step”, on roads, meadows, stubble, neglected land, along roads and even in the cracks of walls and sidewalks. The name comes from the appearance of the plant’s pod, which resembles a heart-shaped purse.
What are the health benefits of celandine? It stops nosebleeds, lungs, wounds, intestines, stomach, kidneys, hemorrhoids, and various other bleeding. It is significant because it helps with painful, long and heavy menstruation and inflammation of the uterine muscle tissue. Celandine is also used as an aid in childbirth because it stimulates labor. Celandine has been used in traditional medicine for many purposes, and has the following properties: antimicrobial, antioxidant, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, affects the health of the reproductive organs, acts as a sedative.
The antibacterial properties of celandine have been investigated by the action of alcohol extract on different stages of growth of Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aerogenesis, Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus. Celandine has a fair amount of vitamin C and potassium, which destroy free radicals in the body and can help promote eye health. HOW TO USE THIS PLANT? Medicinal herbs are used fresh, dried or in the form of liquid extracts, juice and tinctures. It can also be combined with other herbs such as nettle, yarrow, chamomile, horsetail, calendula, etc. For high blood pressure and atherosclerosis, it is used in the form of tea. Buy celandine tea and hawthorn tea (always buy dried leaves in health food stores). Procedure: boil 250 ml of water and add one small spoonful of celandine and hawthorn tea. Boil for 5-7 minutes.
